
Teaching is in my blood. I come from a family of educators, and I am proud to be able to help cultivate a joy of life and learning within my own family, my students and the people with whom I work and play. Learning takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. I am curious about the world and love to explore, travel, and take an interest in others, in my community as well as in other cultures. I hope to instill that same desire and joy in my students.

As a teacher of both art and special education, the core of my educational philosophy is to figure out ways for students to communicate more effectively. The exchange of ideas, desires, feelings, knowledge and information are essential in life. We are also all part of a community, and our ability to show respect for one another and value each person’s unique contribution should be a top priority. We must celebrate our differences, focusing not on deficiencies, but rather on our unique gifts. Everyone has the right to be included, and we have so much to gain as we learn from one another. Emotional intelligence needs to be cultivated, just as we encourage academic success in the classroom. Learning how to respect, cooperate and support one another is more valuable than gaining any textbook knowledge.

As a teacher, I must attend to the particular needs of each child and teach accordingly, always aiming to create an exciting learning environment that will engage and inspire students to explore, discover and grow. One of the most important goals in the classroom is to create an atmosphere where each student feels safe and accepted, by the teacher as well as by peers, so that learning can take place. Finding ways to motivate and spark interest in learning for different students is a continuous and ever changing challenge. Technology can help with that.

I am also concerned that the work I do with students is relevant to life. I strive to provide my students with the tools they need to be successful in school and in society. Education, communication, understanding, cooperation, commitment and active involvement of students, parents, staff and community members is needed in order to make all individuals truly accepted and included. I hope to play a small part in making that possible.
